To celebrate that he had survived, King James said that people should have a big bonfire every year on 5th November. Ever since then, the day has been known as Bonfire Night.

Today, people also burn straw effigies of Guy Fawkes – known as ‘guys’ - on their bonfires and say a poem to remind them about the Gunpowder Plot.
