Egyptians wore clothes made from thin materials so they could keep cool. They liked to use linen, which is a fabric woven from plant fibres.
Different people wore different clothes:
Most children went around completely naked until they were six years old.
Men of the working classes wore a loincloth or short kilt made from linen.
Women wore straight dresses with one or two shoulder straps.
The Egyptians wore: wigs, make-up and jewellery to honour the gods. Both men and women wore blue and green eye shadow and black eyeliner. Many believed that wearing amulets or small charms would help the Gods protect them. Henna dye was used to colour their lips and nails. Rich Egyptians wore wigs and false beards too.
The Egyptians went barefoot most of the time but wore sandals for special occasions or if their feet were likely to get hurt. The sandals worn by the poor were made of woven papyrus or palm leaves but those worn by the rich were made of leather.
