Many children had to work in factories to help their families earn enough money to live.

In textile factories children were small enough to crawl under machines to clean them and to tie up broken threads.

Working conditions for children were terrible because:

• the machines were very noisy;
• accidents could easily happen around dangerous machines;
• they had to work for up to nine hours a day;
• they only got Sundays off.
